Lukashenko Criticizes Western Leaders Over Minsk Agreements

(MENAFN) Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has claimed that Western European leaders involved in negotiating a peace roadmap for Ukraine ten years ago acted in “bad faith” and were “stupid,” reflecting on the discussions hosted by his country.

Germany and France served as guarantors of the Minsk agreements signed in 2014 and 2015, which were supposedly designed to reconcile the post-coup authorities in Kiev with rebels in Ukraine’s Russia-aligned eastern regions.

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel and former French President Francois Hollande later admitted that the agreements were primarily used as a strategy to give Ukraine time to strengthen its military capabilities.

In an interview with a news agency previewed by Belarusian media on Wednesday, Lukashenko criticized the European approach, stating that “the Europeans took a stupid position” by following such tactics. He added, “It turned out that they came here to negotiate not peace, but a future war.”

Lukashenko also highlighted that, as the host of the Minsk talks, he had encouraged the US to join the negotiations. He believes that if Donald Trump had been president at the time, Washington would have insisted on a significant role in the process.

Reflecting on the potential impact of fully implementing the Minsk agreements, he said, “there would have been no war,” and insisted that Trump is correct in asserting that the conflict would not have escalated under his leadership.
